THE PICTURE
There was a neighbour of mine that I never met. and did not wish to meet. Her house was at the back of mine and we were separated by a high fence. But I must admit that I knew her very well because I woke up to her voice on most mornings. She would wake up with curses and reprimands of someone, and she did it on a high tome. So, her curses were like an alarm clock that woke me up every morning. The wrong types of words came out of her and when I later realised it was a child that she directed the words at, I was depressed. I have been wondering for years how that child turned out in life with all the curses hanging over her since her formative years.
Our words have the nature to form and create. They are like a seed and once planted continues in its course till it bears fruits. So, each word we utter must be with the consciousness of the responsibility we bear as creator of consequences for ourselves, for other people, families and nations. Unfortunately, we are careless with words and trifle with this God given grace like children playing carelessly with an expensive electronic gadget. You are scared of the fate that will befall the gadget.
Our scripture for today is the formative utterance by the Lord that gave birth to creation. It was both an expression of the will of God as well as the force that started creation as it was uttered as a command. When words go out, they bring into effect the meaning of the words, especially when it is also an act of your will. A force so powerful that things start to happen at the utterance of words. If you but take a day, to observe the words you hear, you should not be so surprised how we have turned out as a people.
Words are also an expression of the inner state of man. Mat_12:34 “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” Is this warning of Jesus Christ speaking to us in this generation? The first step in being able to use the gift and ability to form words responsibly, is to purify your thoughts. We carry within us so much discontent, hatred and bitterness such that in most cases, what dominates our creative words are negative pronouncements. A casual look of our social media posts reveals what must invariably happen to us as a people. Even the words we form in our “prayers’ hurt and harm more than it can build and heal.
No people can use the gift to form words wantonly without reaping the fruit of the formative power of words. When your words form as you uttered, will the product be good? “…And God saw the light, that it was good:..”
